The Myth of the Self-Made Man

The “self-made man” is one of the most destructive myths in business. It romanticizes the “lone wolf” leader who carries the weight of the business on their shoulders, out-works everyone else, and believes “If you want it done right, do it yourself.”

When a leader believes they must be self-made, they equate control with safety. You become the bottleneck, you train others not to help and success feels hollow. To break the self-made myth, you have to break the habit of hoarding control.

Your strength is limited, and that’s okay. Accountable leadership means shifting from the fear response of “What if they let me down?” to “How do I align their strengths with my weaknesses so we can build this together?”

Practice this

Step 1: Identify your Drain
Pick one task that drains your natural energy. Perhaps it’s running a specific spreadsheet, making a routine supplier call, or packing the truck “just right”.

Step 2: Assign Ownership
Hand this task to a team member whose natural strengths fit the job. Don’t just tell them how; tell them why you are giving it to them.

Make your trust clear to them: “You are better at finishing these details than I am. I’m handing the outcome of this completely over to you.

In my book Isolation to Impact, we explore 10 simple daily habits, that will put your life and your business back on track from day one.

Step 3: The “Hands-Off” Rule
Once you delegate, give them the next 24 hours to do it their way, using their natural strength.
